The BS
in Science Education at UCO is a degree program with five options:
Biology, Chemistry, General Science, Physics,
and Physical Science. The Department of Biology manages the
Biology and General Science options. The Department of Chemistry manages
the Chemistry option. The Department of Engineering and Physics manages
the Physics and Physical Science options.
Inquiries
about the Physics and Physical Science options in the
BS in Science Education program may be directed toward our
Physics Education Advisor: Dr.
Ronald C Miller.
Inquiries about the Biology and General Science options,
as well as questions about the Science Education degree, may be directed
toward the College's Science Education Coordinator: Dr.
Beth Allan (Biology Department).
Inquiries about the Chemistry option may be directed toward
the Chemistry Education Advisor: Dr.
Cheryl Frech (Chemistry Department).

Objectives
|
|
The Science
Education degree program at UCO was developed following guidelines
proposed by the National Science Teachers
Association. The five options share a common nucleus of core courses
covering basic concepts in all areas of science. This nucleus provides
the basis for better understanding the connections and interdependencies
that exist between all branches of science. While students majoring
in one of the three single field options (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics)
will emerge well prepared to teach introductory and advanced secondary
courses in these fields, the common science core will ensure that students
are provided sufficient breadth and depth for teaching science at the
middle school level as well.

Why take
Science Education
at UCO
|
|
At comprehensive
research institutions, introductory courses are frequently taught in large
lecture halls or by graduate students who are themselves barely out of
undergraduate school. At UCO, classes are small (typically 10 to 30 students)
guaranteeing personal interest and attention. In addition, course instructors
are experienced faculty members with PhD's instead of graduate students.
Science Education students at UCO often have opportunities to participate
in science education research projects and outreach activities with faculty
members on and off campus. With its competitive tutition, UCO is also
less expensive than many larger universities. |

Getting Ready
for
Science Education
|
|
Students
interested in a career as a secondary science teacher should take as much
math and science in high school as their schedule permits. Students in
the Physics option should be ready to take calculus in their first semester
of college. Students in the Physical Science option should be ready to
take College Algebra and Trig in their first semester. Students should
have also completed courses in high school biology, chemistry and physics,
and possess strong written and oral communication skills. Students that
have not attained this level of preparation may be advised to enroll in
remedial courses. High school students should feel free to contact one
of the Science Education advisors (listed above) at any time they have
questions about the program. |
Options
|
|
The two Science
Education options managed by the Department of Engineering and Physics
are:
BS
in Science Education - Physics
This option is designed for those students interested in teaching physics
and physics related courses at the high school level.
Sample degree
schedule: BS Science Education - Physics
BS
in Science Education - Physical Science
This option is designed for those students interested in teaching broad
range of introductory physical science courses at the secondary level.
Because it is a broader degree, students completing the minimum
requirements in this option will not have sufficient preparation to
teach advanced courses in Physics or Chemistry at the high school level.
Sample degree
schedule: BS Science Education - Physical
