Engineering and Physics Scholarship Needs |

Scholarships exist to ease the financial burden placed on students attending college. This burden is heavy enough for a traditional college student enrolling right out of high school with help from parents and savings. It is particularly acute for nontraditional students, many of whom must work to support themselves and their families. Working significantly inhibits a student's ability to schedule the necessary study time required to assimilate a difficult subject such as physics. The Department of Physics at the University of Central Oklahoma currently has three active scholarship programs directed toward undergraduate and graduate students. |

The Physics and Engineering Scholarship is the Department's latest source of support for its majors. This fund is currently supported by royalties and contributions from Department of Engineering and Physics faculty members. This fund also provides an opportunity for Engineering and Physics alumni to contribute to the department's scholarship efforts. This award is based on academic record and commitment to the Engineering and Physics Program. |

This award was established in honor of Dr. Whit Marks, longtime Professor of Physics at UCO. This fund provides an opportunity for friends and former students of Dr. Marks to commemorate his service to UCO and the Edmond community. This award is based on academic record and commitment to the Engineering and Physics Program. It carries a small cash stipend and is awarded to the outstanding junior Engineering and Physics major each year. |

Numerous students over the years have benefited from this scholarship fund. Endowed in honor of Beulah R. Fetterman, a teacher in chemistry and physics at the Territorial Normal School, which later became UCO, this award is based on academic record, letters of reference, and commitment to the Engineering and Physics program as indicated by an essay. The amound of the award varies between $200 and $700 per semester. The Fetterman scholarship was established by a gift and cannot be supplemented by outside support. |

| While the Fetterman Scholarship fund continues
to provide support to our students, it is insufficient in meeting all of
their financial needs. The Engineering and Physics Department needs
to support more students with larger awards. It was for this reason
that the Engineering and Physics Scholarship Fund was established
in 1997. It provides mechanism for our past students to help support
our future students.
The Whit Marks Outstanding Physics Scholars Award is limited to a single award each year, and it is currently underfunded. Throughout his career, Dr. Marks has tirelessly provided his time and energy to students. Now it is time to help, in his name, the students of the future. We are seeking your help in building up the endowments in both of these funds. Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. If your are interested in setting up a new endowed Engineering and Physics scholarship fund, arrangements may be made by contacting the UCO Foundation at 405-974-2771. |
