PHY 2114L
Physics For Scientists & Engineers II Lab

SPRING 2005 - SYLLABUS

COURSE SYNOPSIS PHY 2114L (Physics for Scientists and Engineers II Lab) is the continuation of the sequence begun by PHY 2014L (Physics for Scientists and Engineers I Lab).  This sequence is a beginning laboratory course on the experimental techniques of physics.  The approach taken in the course is to gradually develop the necessary  laboratory skills so that the student can apply the principles of experimental physics to problems of scientific and applied interest.  PHY 2114L will concentrate on laboratory experiments from electricity, magnetism, electric circuits, waves, and optics.

CLASS WEBSITE I will keep a website for the course at http://www.physics.uco.edu/~wwilson/PHY2114L/. Look there for important this syllabus announcements, changes in schedule, important announcement,  etc.

PREREQUISITES Concurrent enrollment in the associated lecture course, PHY 2114 (Physics for Scientists and Engineers II).  If you drop the associated lecture course, you must also drop this laboratory course.

OFFICE HOURS Office Hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays 1:00-1:50; Tuesday and Thursday 10:15-11:00; other times by mutual arrangement.  Official hours are as listed, but I am usually around from 9-4 each day during the week whenever I am not teaching class.  Please feel free to come by any time especially if you want to talk about physics or school.  I would ask you, however, to avoid the hour just before class if at all possible.

TEXTBOOK Physics Laboratory Manual for PHY 1214L and PHY 2114L, Version 2.4, by Physics Faculty UCO.  Each student must have their own manual since each experiment has tear-out sheets that are turned in with the general report at the end of each lab. Photocopies are not acceptable. You are responsible for bringing the lab manual to each lab.  The lab manual is available for ~15.00 only from

                      Advanced Printing
                      500 East 2nd Street

across Second Street from the UCO campus in Edmond

SUPPLIES In addition to the lab manual, each student is expected to bring the following to each lab meeting:  their physics textbook used in lecture, #2 Pencils, eraser, straight edge, and a scientific calculator.

LAB PROCEDURE It is expected that each student will have reviewed each experiment in the lab manual before coming to lab and read the references from you textbook.  Prior to starting an experiment there will be a short lecture by your instructor on the experiment to be performed during that lab period.  You should expect to spend the entire lab period conducting the experiment and writing up the lab report.  The lab report is turned in at the end of the lab period.  At the beginning of subsequent labs, you will be given your graded lab report from the previous week to review.  This should take ~2 minutes.  After the review, the report must be returned to your instructor.

The laboratory is a work area.  No food, drinks, or tobacco (in any form) is permitted in the lab.  Feel free to get up and stretch, go for a drink of water, etc.  Consult your instructor or lab assistant whenever you have a question or need to discuss some aspect of the experiment.  Work in the lab will be conducted with lab partners.  While performing each experiment, you are encouraged to discuss the experiment with your partners.  However, when writing your lab report (drawing graphs, performing calculations, answering questions, etc.) each student is expected to work independently. Excessive dependence on other students will adversely affect your lab grade.

MAKE-UP LABS If you should miss a lab for a valid reason, contact your instructor as soon as possible and get permission to make up the experiment missed. The make-up labs are for excused absences only and may be used to replace a missed lab only by receiving prior permission from your instructor.  Unexcused absences will receive a zero for that lab's grade. An excused absence will be granted only for an event or circumstance beyond the student's control.  Illness on the part of the student, jury duty, death or serious illness in the family, etc. are excusable absences.  Most doctor's appointments, job interviews, over-sleeping, demands of work or other courses, including preparation for exams, or a desire to leave early for vacation are not excusable. An excused absence will be granted only for an event or circumstance beyond the student's control. To obtain an Excused Absence, a written request (email is acceptable) documenting the reasons for excusing the absence must be delivered in person to your instructor within one week after returning from the absence.

EXAMS There will be no exams or quizzes. All the lab grade is based on the general lab reports/scores.

GRADES For PHY 2114, the lab grade is considered part the course and your lab instructor will report your average lab grade back to your theory instructor where it will count as 20% of your PHY 2114 course grade.  PHY 2114L students who have more than three absences or who's final lab average is below 60% will receive an automatic grade of F for the PHY 2114 course.

EQUITY
STATEMENT
Students with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact Adaptive Needs Coordinator Brad Morelli at ext. 2573, or see me after class as soon as possible to better ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion.
