Welcome to the web page for the course "Optics and Lab".

This course covers the basic principles and methods of modern optics. Topics covered will include Geometrical Optics, Matrix Methods in Paraxial Optics, Wave Theory, Interference, Diffraction, and Polarization Effects.  The student successfully completing this course will be able to solve basic problems on the above topics, perform simple optics laboratory experiments and will have a good basic understanding of modern optics.

6/11/04 The lab writeups for the next two labs  can be downloaded from the Lab Page. We will do "Experiment #3 - Laser Diffraction by a Ruler" in lab next week (June 14 - 16).  We will do "Experiment #2 - Dispersion in the Prism Spectrometer" in lab the following week (June 21 - 23).

I have just been informed that classes are canceled at UCO this Friday, June 11. The next optics class meeting will then be Monday, June 14. Homework #3 will be due then. The lab writeup for next week's lab  can be downloaded by Friday. We will do "Experiment #3 - Laser Diffraction by a Ruler" in lab next week.

    EXCEL Tutorial for Physicists and Engineers

We will be using the EXCEL spreadsheet in lab to plot and analyze data. If you are unfamiliar with EXCEL or are rusty with it you might want to review the Excel Tutorial at

before coming to Lab #1 next week.
