Homework Solutions are now posted!  These will be updated as the semester progresses.

Requirements

A fundamental requirement is that you must come to lectures. An occasional absence will be understood provided there is a reasonable excuse (e.g., you were delayed by a terrorist incident, you have to be away to compete in an official university sporting event, or your boy/girl friend had to be picked up at the airport and you were absolutely the only possible person able to do this).

It is assumed that you have seen some modern physics before in a prior course (typically PHY 3104 - Modern Physics).

Attendance

Attendance at every class meeting is expected. Absences can be excused if email is sent to me prior to the lecture with a plausible excuse. The good news is that in the past I have been pretty lenient about what constitutes a valid excuse - provided you ask to be excused prior to the lecture (by email). In a few cases I will excuse an absence after the missed class, particularly if there was a good reason you couldn't send email (e.g. your house burned down, the dog ate your internet, etc.).

Textbook

You will need to get a copy of the textbook:

Introduction to Solid State Physics, 7th Ed., by Charles Kittel (John Wiley, New York, 1996).

There will be assigned readings from the text and also homework problems  will be assigned from it.
