| DESCRIPTION | PHY
1214L (General Physics II Lab) is the continuation of the
sequence begun by PHY 1114L (General Physics I Lab). This
sequence is a beginning laboratory course on the experimental
techniques of physics. The approach taken in the course is to
gradually develop the necessary laboratory skills so that the student
can apply the principles of experimental physics to problems of
scientific interest. PHY 1214L will concentrate on laboratory
experiments from electricity, magnetism, electric circuits, waves, and
optics. |

| PREREQUISITES | PHY 1214 (General Physics II) or equivalent. If you drop the associated lecture course, you must also drop this laboratory course. |
| TEXTBOOK |
The lab will meet at its
scheduled time for an orientation session the
first meeting. You will need to bring a copy of your lab manual: Physics
Laboratory Manual for PHY 1214L and PHY 2114L, Version 2.6, by the
UCO Physics and Engineering Faculty. Each student must have their own
manual since each experiment has tear-out sheets that are turned in
with the general report at the end of each lab. Photocopies are not
acceptable. You are responsible for bringing the lab manual to each

| SUPPLIES |
In addition to the lab manual,
each student is expected to bring the following to each lab
meeting: their physics textbook used in lecture, #2 Pencils,
eraser, straight edge, and a scientific calculator. |
| MEETING TIME |
W 1:00-3:50, Howell Hall 153. |
| CELL PHONES |
All computers and communications devices must be turned off and put away during both lecture and lab sessions. This includes cell phones, pagers, laptop computers, palm plots, etc. |
| EXAMS AND GRADES | There will be no exams or quizzes. All the lab grade is based
on the lab reports and pre-lab scores. For PHY 1214, the lab grade is considered part the course and your lab instructor will report your average lab grade back to your theory instructor where it will count as 15% of your PHY 1214 course grade. PHY 1214L students who have more than three absences will receive an automatic grade of "F" for the PHY 1214 course. |
| MAKE-UP
LABS |
If you should miss a lab for a
valid reason, contact your instructor as soon as possible and get
permission to make up the experiment missed. The make-up labs are for excused absences
only and may be used to replace a missed lab only by receiving prior
permission from your instructor. Unexcused absences will
receive a zero for that lab's grade. An excused absence will be
granted only for an event or circumstance beyond the student's control.
To obtain an Excused Absence, a written request (email is acceptable)
documenting the reasons for excusing the absence must be delivered to
your instructor within one week after returning from the absence. |

mail, but I am not very good at checking it regularly so it is probably
better to contact me by email which I do check regularly My official office hours: MF, 1:00-1:50 PM; T Th, 7:00-7:30 PM; and W 3:00-3:50 PM in my office (Howell Hall 221H). Other times by mutual arrangement (email or telephone to arrange). Official hours are as listed above, but I am usually around from 9-4 each day during the week whenever I am not teaching class or at other scheduled meetings. Please feel free to come by any time especially if you want to talk about physics or school. I would ask you, however, to avoid the hour just before I teach a class if at all possible. Take your chances and drop by unannounced or telephone or email to arrange. |
