Wei R. Chen received his Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon in 1988.  He currently is the Assistant Dean of the College of Mathematics and Science, and a Professor in the Department of Engineering and Physics at the University of Central Oklahoma.  He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma State University.  In 2007, he was elected as a Fellow of SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering.

Dr. Chen's main research interests include laser-tissue interactions for both soft and hard tissues, laser photothermal treatment of cancer, anti-tumor immune responses induced by laser treatment, simulation of light transport in tissues, and monitoring of cancer treatment using different imaging techniques.

Since joining the University of Central Oklahoma, Dr. Chen has enjoyed a rich academic life of research and teaching, and providing services in different capacities to students, the university, and professional communities.

As a professor, Dr. Wei Chen is quite energetic and enthusiastic. He has a genuine interest in the students' learning and that is demonstrated in his close interactions with them in and out of the classrooms. Dr. Chen has taught many different courses and laboratories in his time at the university and has personally developed 2 new laboratories as well as 2 original courses. Since 1999, Dr. Chen has dedicated himself to the establishment of a biomedical engineering (BME) program at UCO. He has put forth much effort into curriculum design as well as implementing and teaching new courses. In the fall of 2001 UCO became the first and only University to offer an undergraduate BME program in the State of Oklahoma. The first graduating class was in 2003 two years ahead of schedule and since its inception the program has grown rapidly. In his brief time at the University Dr. Chen has also directed numerous students in independent studies, directed readings, design projects, research, and internship opportunities. In both 2001 and 2003 Dr. Chen has been awarded thee UCO Faculty Merit Credit Award for Teaching Activities.

As a researcher, Dr. Chen has spent over ten years conducting research in laser cancer treatment, laser tissue welding, biomedical cancer imaging, and cancer chemotherapy treatment.  Dr. Chen has received research grants from Federal, State, University funding agencies, as well as from industries, totaling more than $1.2 million.  Dr. Chen has published more than fifty refereed articles. His research group has developed laser immunotherapy, a method for cancer treatment using a laser, laser absorbing dye, and immunoadjuvant. This method has shown to be very promising in pre-clinical studies and clinical studies.

As a member of the professional society, Dr. Chen has been active with students and university since joining the UCO faculty. He has served on numerous committees at the department, college, and university levels. Of these duties the most significant has been in the development of the new biomedical engineering curricula. Also, he has provided support for students through advisement, student organizations, and other activities.  Dr. Chen serves on many university committees and professional organization.
